NORTH CAROLINA CENSUS OF 1850

Bobbitt Family Records

North Carolina became a state in 1789. The first record of a Bobbitt family member in North Carolina was in October of 1718. The family was first recorded in the state census of 1786 and in the first federal census of 1790. Before the census of 1850 only the head of the family was mentioned by name. Before the 1850 census, members of the family lived in Chowan Precinct, Bertie Precinct, Anson County, Buncombe County, Bute County, Franklin County, Granville County, Halifax County, Moore County, Sampson County, Wake County and Warren County.

The cradle of the Bobbitt family of North Carolina was in what is known today as Warren County. Warren County was formed in 1779 from Bute County. Bute County was formed from Granville County in 1764.

The 1850 census was the first census to list each member of the household by the name and age of each member of the household. It also names the state each person was born in. The age stated by the census taker may vary by one year depending on when each person was born and the date of the census record. ' These records have been checked with the original census records in the National Archives and with the various computer compilations now in print. This does not mean that every Bobbitt family was counted in the census or that the information given to the census taker was completely accurate. Some of the names were spelled differently and the handwriting of the period was not always legible. Comments after each census record are based on records of the county and genealogical information researched over a period of years.

CHATHAM COUNTY - formed in 1770 from Orange County.
