In 1850 Bobbitt families were counted in eleven counties of Tennessee. The counted were, Cheatham, Williamson, Robertson, Gibson, Fayette, Marshall, Madison,. Haywood, Henry, Rutherford, and Weakley. In 1860 Bobbitt families were in eleven counties but added Humphreys and Carroll to the list.

James Bobbitt was born in Warren County, North Carolina. He married in South Carolina ' and reared his family in Gibson County, Tennessee. In the 1850 census James is stated as having been born in South Carolina which is an error. Sarah Bobbitt here is believed to be his second wife.
