TENNESSEE CENSUS OF 1850

Bobbitt Family Records

The first Bobbitt family to live in what is today Tennessee was the family of Jubilee Bobbitt. Jubilee or Jubel as he was sometimes called was born in Montgomery County, Virginia. He was a son of James Bobbitt of Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Jubilee lived for a short period of time in Buncombe County, North Carolina and moved from there to Giles County, Tennessee. According to the tax records of Buncombe County, Jubilee left there in 1806 or 1807. The records of Giles County Tennessee show that daughters of Jubilee were married in the county as early as 1810.

Most of the Bobbitt families who moved from Virginia and North Carolina to Tennessee moved there after the war of 1812. Many received or purchased land grants as a result of service in the war of 1812. The earliest census records for Tennessee are 1820. Bobbitt families are found in the early census records in the counties of Lincoln, Giles, Rutherford, and Williamson. There were 18 Bobbitt males listed in the 1820 census records of Tennessee.

Tennessee Bobbitt families had many connections with other relatives in Arkansas, Alabama, and Mississippi. There was much moving back and forth between Tennessee and the other states.

By 1850 the federal census records in Tennessee of Bobbitt families were recorded in Fayette, Gibson, Haywood, Henry, Madison, Marshall, Montgomery, Robertson, Rutherford, Weakley, and Williamson.
