M. G. Bobbitt was named Mathew G. Bobbitt and was a son of James Bobbitt of South Carolina. He was married to Martha Williams on December 15, 1846 in, Madison County, Tennessee. His sister-in-law Sophia Williams, was living with the family at the time of this census.

Family # 1900, counted December 12, 1850.

James Bobbitt               64 (1786) South Carolina*
Malinda Bobbitt            24 (1826) South Carolina
Silas Bobbitt                 23 (1827) South Carolina
Jane Bobbitt                 22 (1828) Tennessee
Caroline Bobbitt           18 (1832) Tennessee
Albert Bobbitt              17 (1833) Tennessee

James Bobbitt was born in Warren County, North Carolina. The information in this census record is in error. The error is corrected in the 1860 census records. James is here living with his children. His wife apparently died in 1841 or 1844 as she was living in the 1840 census. The family moved to Tennessee in 1827 as Jane was born there in 1828. William Bobbitt the father of James Bobbitt did not die until 1839.

James Bobbitt moved from South Carolina to Tennessee where he joined his first cousin, Arthur Bobbitt in Madison County. The most interesting record of the family is from the 1840 census taken in Madison County, Tennessee.

James Bobbitt:

1 male under 5 (1835-1840)         1 female 6 10 (1830-1835)

2 males 10 - 15 (1825-1830)        1 female 10 15 (1825-1830)

2 males 15 - 20 (1820-1825)        1 female 15 20 (1820-1825)

2 males 20 - 30 (1810-1820)        1 female 40 50 (1790-1800)

1 male 50 - 60 (1780-1790)

According to the 1860 census, James was born in 1788 and we think that the date is accurate. From all the records it is believed that the family consisted of 8 males and 4 females, in addition to the husband and wife. We do not know the name of James' wife.

The sons were named, James, Mathew, Zebulon, Drury, Charles, Silas, Stephen, and Albert. Zebulon seems to have been the eldest child in the family, born in 1816. The daughters were, Elizabeth, Malinda, Jane, and Caroline. Marriages of the children were recorded in Madison, Fayette, and Gibson counties.

It will always be an item of speculation as to how much contact or knowledge the two Bobbitt families of Gibson county had of each other. The town of Dyer was originally called Bobbittville, and probably on account of the number from both families.
