Marsha Berry Research, March 2009
Marsha Berry initiates new research on The Bobbitt Family.
"Two of Dr. Amy Harris's BYU students in ancient British research are interested in helping Marsha further research on two 1500's Bobbet in Suffolk County, England. The researchers are Eileen Sears and Nanette Averett. Dr. Harris contacted Marsha today, Friday, 20 March 2009 about her students. Marsha and Dr. Harris know each other well."
"Dr. Amy Harris's BYU students, Eileen Sears and Nanette Averett, are meeting with Marsha at our house Thursday at 2:00 PM to talk about our Bobbet in Suffolk County, England research. These ladies know how to research and have access to records... Marsha gave the ladies copies of all of her research sources on William Bobbet born before 1559 and his proposed father Robard Bobbet and grandfather Lionel Bobbit... Each has a copy of research data and the sources mentioned, plus maps of the Suffolk County, England area where the Bobbets lived."

"In the 1500's to 1900's All Bobbitt and
Variations Burial Index England and Wales are:
Possible father of William Bobbet born before 1559 in Suffolk County, England and burial 1582 - Will of his Uncle John Bobbet, probated 2 Feb 1576, Blaxhall, Suffolk, England which mentions William Bobbet's father is deceased and sons William and brother Robert who are not legal age and their Uncle's responsibility from his deceased brother is:
1. Robard Bobbet 1 Apr 1567 Falkenham, Suffolk, England, St. Ethelbert, located 6 miles SE of Woodbridge
Possible grandfather of William Bobbet 1582 Consistory Will of 1582 Grundisburgh, Suffolk, England and burial in Grundisburgh Parish Register is
2. Lionel Bobbit 7 Sep 1669 Brandeston, Suffolk, England, All Saints, located 5 miles from Wickham Market
Are there more records for Robard Bobbet and Lionel Bobbit in a time when records are fewer? Marsha wants to try."
Prerequisite: Please become familiar with Marsha Berry Research and Marsha Berry Research @ Rootsweb
The following information is from Marsha Berry, March 6, 2009. Listed below are two pieces of information that closely resemble one another. Both have been published here to allow for complete understanding of the information.
"Dr. Amy Harris at BYU and I both believe because of the location is close to
a day's horse ride from Grundisburgh, Suffolk, England, the 1500's to 1900's all
Bobbitt and Variations Burial Index England and Wales that 2 Bobbitts are the
father and grandfather of the last William and wife Kathryn Bobbet I have
currently. There are no other records, so it is on strong assumption.
William Bobbet was mentioned as his uncle's responsibility as William's father was deceased
John Bobbet of Blaxhall, Suffolk, England 2 Feb 1576 Will
William Bobbet's Will was probated 4 Aug 1582.
Lionel Bobbitt 7 Sep 1559 Brandeston
Robard Bobbet 1 Apr 1567 Falkenham
I need to give you my references for the above to be published.

"Dr. Amy Harris of the BYU Genealogy and Family History Department and Marsha
Berry believe the father and grandfather of the born before 1558 in Suffolk
County England William Bobbet is found in the 1500's to 1900's Bobbitt and
Variants Burial Index of England and Wales.
William Bobbet was mentioned as his uncle's responsibility as William's father was deceased.

There are photos of the Brandeston All Saints and Falkenham St. Ethelbert Churches and a history on suffolk.activeboard.com.
All of this is based on strong and reasonable assumption as records are very sparse."
As stated by Marsha, the position of Lionel and Robard Bobbitt in this pedigree is based on strong assumption. This assumption is now being researched by Marsha Berry and Dr. Amy Harris' students Eileen Sears and Nanette Averett. New found research information will be added to this page as it becomes available.

Subject: Progress of Bobbett Research
Just wanted to let you know how the research is coming . . .
Nanette and I have divided up the project. Nanette will be researching Robard and I am researching Lionel.
We will jointly be looking at various probate records from the jurisdictions that affect the area of Suffolk we are
researching: Archdeaconry of Sudbury, Archdeaconry of Suffolk, and Diocese of Norwich.
I have information about Lionel Bobbett that I will send to you later this afternoon through yahoo. Until then. Cheers,
From: Marsha Berry
This is Eileen Sears's Monday, 30 March 2009 Research Report for Lionel Bobbett of Brandeston,
Suffolk, England, the proposed grandfather of William Bobbet born about 1558 with the 14 June 1582
Will in Grundisburg, Suffolk, England and burial date of 24 June 1582 in Grundisburg.

Research Report for Lionel Bobbett
The following information was obtained from a search of the Parish Register Transcripts
for Brandeston Parish, Suffolk, England, (which do not begin until 1559) 1*
Page 97 Burial 29 October 1559 Lionel Bobbet
Page 97 Burial 20 December 1559 Joan Bobbet, wife of Lionel
I checked the burials from 1559 to 1700. There were no other Bobbet’s (of any kind of
spelling variation) listed in the burial records]. The record was extremely to read and it took only
a few minutes to search the record to this date.
Page 47 Marriage 1 February 1578/1579 Thomas Wade married Alice Maye
Page 101 Burial 13 January 1579/1580 Alice, wife of Tho. Wade
Page 47 Marriage 9 September 1582 Thomas Wade married Margaret Bobbet
It is obvious from this information, that Margaret Bobbet was a second wife to Thomas
Wade as his first wife, Alice, died. No relationship was given in the parish register between
Lionel Bobbet and Margaret Bobbet. Although Margaret is likely the daughter of Lionel and
Joan Bobbet, it is possible that she could also be a sister, cousin, or niece to Lionel Bobbet.
Page 11 Baptism 25 March 1584 Tho. Wade; parents Tho. & Marg[re]t
Page 101 Burial 7 April 1584 Tho., son of Tho. & Marg[re]t Wade
I searched the Baptisms until 1700. There were no other children for Thomas and
Margret Bobbet Wade baptized in this parish or for anyone else of the Bobbett surname. The
marriages were searched until 1700 and no Bobbett surnames were found, other than the
marriage for Margret Bobbet Wade.
The Following Probate Records were Searched To Find a Will for Lionel Bobbet:
1. Archdeaconry of Sudbury, Index’s to Wills 1520-1626; Suffolk, England, Microfilm
#097,047, held at the Family History Center at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah.
2. Archdeaconry Court of Sudbury, Suffolk, An index to Wills & Administrations and other
Testamentary Records, Commissary Court of Bury S. Edmunds; Microfilm #097,043, Family
History Center at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah.
No Will for Lionel Bobbet was found on either of the two above probate records.
*1 Parish Register Transcripts, Parish of Brandeston, Suffolk, England; microfilm #993,225
items 24- and item 30, Baptisms 1560-1782, Burials 1559-1812, Marriages and Cemetery Inscriptions, held at the
Family History Center of Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah.
Marsha Berry - Mar 30, 2009
The first of our Bobbet in Suffolk County, England reports from Eileen Sears arrived
Monday evening, 30 March 2009, called Research Report for Lionel Bobbett. This report
verifies Marsha's theory the 20 Dec 1559 Brandeston Parish, Suffolk County, England burial
record of Joan Bobbet in the 1500's to 1900's All Bobbitt and Variations Burial Index England
and Wales, is she is Lionel Bobbet's wife is true.
A Margaret Bobbet who married a Thomas Wade 9 Sep 1852 was found, but no relationship given.
This does not mean that Robard Bobbet is not the son of Lionel Bobbet. No Will was found for
Lionel Bobbet, so we are back to assumption.
The research goes on. It is not over yet.
The original Will for William Bobbet from Woodbridge, Suffolk, England 1516.
This Will is from the National Archives of
England. Marsha Berry downloaded it and emailed it to Eileen Sears.
It will need to be transcribed to be readable.
"One of our BYU Bobbet in Suffolk County, England, Eileen Sears, will
transcribe the Will for us as on 17 April 2009, Eileen emailed Marsha
that she received the .pdf file Will Marsha emailed her and that she
will transcribe the Will. I know it will be under the watchful eye of
her instructor Dr. Amy Harris.
Marsha is really curious what is in this Will and if there is a Bobbet
connection." -- Marsha Berry
Transcription of the Will of William Bobbet from Woodbridge, Suffolk, England 1516
"Eileen, thank you very much for the 1516 Will for William Bobbet Woodbridge, Suffolk, England transcription. Great job! However, there is no Bobbet connection with only a daughter Alys and her husband Thomas Medenoe and William's wife Issabell." --Marsha Berry
When Eileen Sears spoke to Dr. Amy Harris, Amy said possibly William Bobbet Woodbridge, Suffolk, England may have had sons even though his 1516 Will had a daughter. Yes, that is possible, but I wish we had something in writing. We'll see as to me this research is not ended. Please add this information to your web site. Thank you.
Keith Bobbitt 27 April 2009... Although there is nothing in this Will to prove a connection with Marsha's very early line, we can not forget this guy. The location is right, the surname is right, and the time period is right. However, we can not add this William to our tree until he is proven.
Thomas Bobbett buried 28 Jan 1587 Falkenham, Suffolk, England is being researched by Eileen Sears. Robard Bobbet buried 1 Apr 1567 Falkenham, Suffolk, England is being researched by Nanette Averett.
Research reports will be posted here as they are reported.
This line... Lionel and Robard and William 1516 are NOT proven. 19 April 2009 and 27 April 2009
Lionel Bobbitt buried 7 Sep 1559 Brandeston, Suffolk, England
Robard Bobbet buried 1 Apr 1567 Falkenham, Suffolk, England
Eileen Sears and Nanette Averett are researching the online Norfolk Record
Office Bobbett names in Suffolk County, England.
Marsha requested they research the following:
1. William Bobbett of Benhall, Suffolk, England 1561
2. John Bobbett 1611-1612
3. Thomas Bobbett, of Marsford, Suffolk 1559
Marsha advised the ladies if they find a Bobbett name that stands out to them to persue that person.
We will await their report.

Here's a short adaptation of my report, since it is not being sent currently. . .
I have looked at the Monumenta Antiqua land deeds and rolls for Suffolk - I found nothing about any Bobbetts.
I searched apprenticeship records for Ipswich - found no Bobbets
I searched the marriage licenses and bonds for Suffolk - I found nothing although much of the film was very damaged.
I have searched many of the films for the Archdeaconry of Suffolk, Registers of Wills - some were indexed and other not. I will bring you copies of the wills tomorrow - some I just abstracted relevant genealogical information.
There are a couple I want to transcribe.
I did transcribe the will of Johannis Bobbett of Hollesley. The village of Hollesley is only about a mile from Woodbridge. Since the parish records for Hollesley did not begin until 1623, I will need to do a radial search of parishes in the hopes to find some christenings for the family of Johannis.
Although the will of Johannis Bobbett was written in 1580, the Lyonell Bobbett mentioned in the will of course, is not the Lyonell Bobbett who died in Brandeston in the mid 1500's. Yet, because the name Lyonell is so unusual, I strongly feel that Lyonell is mostly likely the grandson of the Lyonell Bobbett of Brandeston and that Johannis Bobbett would be Lyonell's son. (I hope that I am making sense). The proximity of Hollesley to Woodbridge, Falkenham, and Felixstowe parishes and the time period make this a very likely match. Unfortunately, I did not find Johannis Bobbett of
Hollesley in the national burial index. It would have been nice to have another clue to put the family together - I guess it is never that easy.
Let me know if you receive the information that I have sent you. Thank you.
See you tomorrow.
Will transcription of Johananis Bobbett
Eileen Sears and Nanette Averett met with me today, Thursday, 2 July 2009, at 1:00-1:30 PM at our house. We had a brief but very good meeting.
Eileen and Nanette presented me with 2 large folders of their research and documents, too much to cover in this email.
We talked about our goals for further Bobbet research:
1. Eileen and Nanette will work together at the BYU Library and check out the films of nearby Parishes to Grundisburgh.
2. Eileen and Nanette next week will go to Salt Lake City and check out the films of nearby Parishes to Grundisburgh.
3. Eileen will transcribe the remaining 5 of the 6 Wills.
4. Our goal is to find a William and Robert Bobbet together other than the 1576 Will of their Uncle John Bobbet of Blaxhall.
Note: One of the 6 Wills, Roger Bobbet of Ipswich, 4 January 1521 has a pattern for the next generation descending for Eileen and Nanette to watch for.
Wife - Johan
Sons - Thomas, William, Robert
Daughter - Margaret

As Eileen and Nanette are such good researchers, I want them to continue researching, and they are excited and willing to do so. The ladies have found Bobbets that I know are related. I am wanting the ladies to keep researching to find the father of William and his brother Robert, if their father had time before his death to write a Will or other document. I am hoping the answer is on a document.
Please put the above information and the 4 emails between Eileen Sears and I that I forwarded to you on the internet on your Bobbet web site.
Note: Marsha sent 4 emails. The last two were duplicates of the first two with .PDF attachments instead of .WPD attachments. Therefore, only 2 emails were sent from Marsha to me. You have just read them.
Nanette Averett sent her Bobbet Research Log files in .pdf format.
